Eligibility Criteria for Admission to M.Tech Programme

The programme is open to candidates of all categories with Bachelor's Degree in Engineering / Technology / M Sc or equivalent professional degrees (AMIE, etc.) and having a valid GATE score. Note: All regular category candidates (except those having B.Tech. degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 8.0) must possess a valid score of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Candidates seeking admission to M.Tech. Programme of the Institute shall have to possess a minimum of 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) for General/OBC categories and 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) for SC/ST categories in the final qualifying examination. All selected candidates have to produce the certificate with regard to the marks secured in the final qualifying examination by 31-10-2016. Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy layer) and PD categories: As per Govt. of India rules. OBC (including OBC Minorities) (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per prescribed format in annexure I, II and III (as applicable) available with the Application form.

Additional Conditions For Candidates Still To Appear In Qualifying Examinations

Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before date of registration to M.Tech programme at IIT Patna in July 2016. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 31-10-2016. Further, they must fulfil the minimum requirements of marks/CGPA/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfil any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission

Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Admission in to Ph.D. Programme

In all the disciplines, the upper age limit is 28 years (B.Tech./B.E./M.Sc./MA/MCA/MBA) and 32 years (M.Tech./M.E./M.S./M.Phil.) to be calculated from the last date for receiving the application form (Printed and Signed version, 02.05.2016) and is applicable only for candidates applying in Regular and Full time category (Institute Fellows). Upper age is relaxed up to 05 years in case of candidate belonging to Schedule Castes/Schedule Tribes, Women, Physically Handicapped and OBC applicants.

PhD in Engineering

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering Department, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

• Candidates having M.Tech./M.E. degree in a Engineering/Technology, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
• Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

PhD in Science

For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

• M. Phil. or Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences

For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

• M. Phil. or Master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science/Management in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

Selection Procedure for Admission to M.Tech Programme

Selection is based on performance in GATE and Personal Interview of short-listed candidates. Marks obtained in GATE and in personal interview will have 70% and 30% weightage respectively. Personal interview will be held to test the skills in basic science, engineering, and relevant areas. Personal interviews will be conducted at IIT Patna.

Selection Procedure for Admission to Ph.D. Programme

The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/ and interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
